Context from the museum

This screen is from a separated pair depicting the Eight Views of Xiao-Xiang, a Chinese painting and poetry theme. Read in the manner customary for Japan, from right to left, the motifs here are “Evening Bell from a Mist-Shrouded Temple,” “Wild Geese Descending to a Sandbar,” “Sunset Glow over a Fishing Village,” and “Mountain Market in Clearing Mist.” The “crab-claw” style of the trees, in which the branches resemble the curved claws of a crab, and the stippling effect indicate a familiarity with Korean interpretations of Chinese painting styles of the Song dynasty..

Read the dimensions before the image

The selected painting measurement for Landscape with Motifs from the Eight Views of Xiao-Xiang is 350.8 cm wide and 129.5 cm high, equivalent to approximately 138.1 × 51.0 inches. Dividing width by height gives a format ratio of 2.71:1. The rectangular bounding area is 4.54 square meters; it describes the measured footprint, not the amount of paint or the monetary value.

On an illustrative 300 cm wall, the recorded width occupies 116.9% of the span before adding a frame. That exceeds the example wall width, so a smaller reference wall would not reproduce the recorded scale. These are calculations by Physical Art For Crypto using museum measurements. They are not the museum’s display recommendations.
