Begin with Westport's material record
Westport Museum describes a local-history institution based at Wheeler House on Avery Place, while the Town traces incorporation to the nineteenth century and acknowledges Indigenous people, farmers, harbor workers, and enslaved and free African Americans in the community's development. Those records create a responsible historical frame. They do not prove that an offered artwork originated in Westport or carries any recognized local association.
If a seller describes a work as connected to Westport, request the specific supporting record: an artist address, dated exhibition label, invoice, correspondence, publication, or ownership document. Create a separate object sheet for maker, title, date, medium, support, dimensions, edition status, condition, and known ownership sequence. Photographs should cover the face, reverse, edges, labels, signatures, frame joints, and hanging hardware under useful light.
