One of the most profound implications of smart contracts for the art world is the ability to program royalties into the sale of a physical artwork. Imagine buying a painting from Lei-Kol, and coded into the transaction is a smart contract that stipulates: if this painting is ever resold, 10 percent of the resale price automatically goes back to the artist. The royalty is not a hope or a handshake agreement — it is enforced by code on the blockchain.
This is already standard practice in NFT markets (where the "droit de suite" artist resale right is programmed into the smart contract), and extending it to physical art is a question of infrastructure, not technology. The linking of a physical painting to a blockchain record — sometimes called a "physical-backed token" — would allow the artwork to carry its royalty contract through every future sale, ensuring the artist participates in the long-term value of their work.

An international art sale today involves: currency conversion (1-3 percent fee), international wire transfer ($15-50 fee), correspondent banking (1-3 day delay), and sometimes a manual review by the bank's fraud department (indefinite delay). A transaction between a collector in Singapore and an artist in the United States settles in seconds to minutes, with near-zero fees, with no bank involvement, and with no geographic restrictions.
This is not theoretical. As more artists and collectors adopt this infrastructure, geography will cease to be a meaningful factor in the art market.
Immutable Provenance Records
Provenance fraud — forged documentation, falsified ownership histories, misattributed works — is a persistent problem in the art world. Blockchain offers a solution: every transaction in a painting's history is recorded on an immutable, timestamped public ledger. Ownership transfers, exhibition history, conservation treatments, and authentication events can all be written to the blockchain, creating a provenance record that cannot be lost, destroyed, or forged.
When paired with a physical Certificate of Authenticity and unique identifiers (holographic tags, DNA marking, or embedded NFC chips), blockchain provenance creates a dual-authentication system — digital and physical — that would make art fraud functionally impossible.
