Context from the museum

This minimalist landscape places most of the representational elements in the lower right foreground. A lone gentleman strolls along a zigzagging path by the water. With the gentleman’s staff acting as a visual cue, the viewer’s gaze is directed to geese flying over distant mountains. The scene of a marshland, with its wet and soft ground dotted with vegetation, suggests springtime in Jiangnan. Combined with the flying geese, the album evokes the poetic lines: By spring fields, geese are about to return, Under chilly waters, fish are submerging. 春郊欲回雁, 寒水正沉鱼

Read the dimensions before the image

The selected image measurement for Landscape with Flying Geese is 26.5 cm wide and 25.5 cm high, equivalent to approximately 10.4 × 10.0 inches. Dividing width by height gives a format ratio of 1.04:1. The rectangular bounding area is 0.07 square meters; it describes the measured footprint, not the amount of paint or the monetary value.

On an illustrative 300 cm wall, the recorded width occupies 8.8% of the span before adding a frame. A centered placement leaves approximately 136.8 cm on each side before adding a frame. These are calculations by Physical Art For Crypto using museum measurements. They are not the museum’s display recommendations.

Questions to bring to your own collection

With Landscape with Flying Geese in view, identify one feature you can point to, then distinguish what the museum records from your personal response. Keep its medium, Album leaf; ink and slight color on silk, in your notes when comparing contemporary works.

  • Which part of this near-square composition catches your eye first?
  • Would a 26.5 cm width still suit the space after allowing for furniture and a frame?
  • What surface detail would you need to see in person or in a close photograph?
