Context from the museum

Clad in a straw rain poncho and wide-brimmed hat, a fisherman is seated in a small boat. Reeds sparkle on the far shoreline among dark, black rock forms that appear to float above the water. On the near shoreline are a pair of pines, a grove of bamboo or water reeds, and two withered deciduous trees from which moss hangs. This landscape painting, which emphasizes an intimate solitary moment through evoking various atmospheric elements—rain, evening light, and frosty air—was one of the main subjects of mid- and late 16th-century landscape paintings.

Read the dimensions before the image

The selected painting only measurement for Landscape with Fishermen is 31.5 cm wide and 42.1 cm high, equivalent to approximately 12.4 × 16.6 inches. Dividing width by height gives a format ratio of 0.75:1. The rectangular bounding area is 0.13 square meters; it describes the measured footprint, not the amount of paint or the monetary value.

On an illustrative 300 cm wall, the recorded width occupies 10.5% of the span before adding a frame. A centered placement leaves approximately 134.3 cm on each side before adding a frame. These are calculations by Physical Art For Crypto using museum measurements. They are not the museum’s display recommendations.

Questions to bring to your own collection

With Landscape with Fishermen in view, identify one feature you can point to, then distinguish what the museum records from your personal response. Keep its medium, hanging scroll; ink and slight color on silk, in your notes when comparing contemporary works.

  • Which part of this vertical composition catches your eye first?
  • Would a 31.5 cm width still suit the space after allowing for furniture and a frame?
  • What surface detail would you need to see in person or in a close photograph?
