Context from the museum

This impressive view of a bustling fish market belongs to a series of paintings that Pissarro made during the summer of 1902 depicting the harbor at Dieppe. Borrowing from the Impressionist method of portraying a modern city from a high vantage point, he enlivened the scene with rich, vibrant colors applied with energetic, broken brushstrokes. Ever concerned with the fleeting effects of atmosphere, Pissarro painted the interpenetration of industrial steam with the clouds in the brilliant, sunlit sky.

A detail to notice

Pissarro painted this work from an upper level hotel room in Dieppe. He was suffering from a recurring eye infection at the time that prevented him from working outdoors.

Read the dimensions before the image

The selected unframed measurement for Fishmarket is 81.3 cm wide and 66 cm high, equivalent to approximately 32.0 × 26.0 inches. Dividing width by height gives a format ratio of 1.23:1. The rectangular bounding area is 0.54 square meters; it describes the measured footprint, not the amount of paint or the monetary value.

On an illustrative 300 cm wall, the recorded width occupies 27.1% of the span before adding a frame. A centered placement leaves approximately 109.3 cm on each side before adding a frame. These are calculations by Physical Art For Crypto using museum measurements. They are not the museum’s display recommendations.

Questions to bring to your own collection

With Fishmarket in view, identify one feature you can point to, then distinguish what the museum records from your personal response. Keep its medium, oil on canvas, in your notes when comparing contemporary works.

  • Which part of this horizontal composition catches your eye first?
  • Would a 81.3 cm width still suit the space after allowing for furniture and a frame?
  • What surface detail would you need to see in person or in a close photograph?
