The collection provides a reference for images assembled from many individual units. That construction differs from brushwork on canvas, but it encourages a collector to look at both the separate marks and the image that emerges when they are seen together.
Test the distance at which marks merge
Study a candidate painting first as a small image and then through a close detail. Ask whether its brushwork creates a clear overall structure or whether the effect depends on standing nearby. For a pointillist or mosaic-like composition, note where colours optically combine and where edges remain distinct. Use the actual viewing distance in your room when comparing two sizes, rather than assuming that a more detailed painting must always be larger.
