UNESCO describes Koutammakou across northeastern Togo and neighbouring Benin, with Batammariba earthen tower-houses and a close relationship among settlement, landscape and social life. The site is not confined to one country. Its buildings are a cultural reference with lived functions, not simply a collection of sculptural outlines to detach from the communities who made and use them.
Look at mass before detail
When comparing architectural paintings, temporarily ignore small windows and surface marks. Identify the major light and dark masses and the intervals between them. A low viewpoint can give a modest structure a monumental presence, while a high viewpoint may emphasize the arrangement of a settlement. Ask the painter whether the scene records a specific building or combines several observations. That distinction belongs with the work’s title and description.
