UNESCO describes traditional Syrian glassblowing in Damascus using melted waste glass, with colour added during making or decoration after cooling. Its account includes painted gold motifs and the transmission of workshop knowledge. This is a specific glassmaking practice. A canvas depicting glass, or a painting using transparent glazes, remains a different kind of object with its own materials and history.
Examine transparency in the actual painting
Ask whether a luminous effect comes from thin paint over a light ground, reflective additions or a transparent support. Request a detail that shows overlaps and edges. For a work incorporating glass, obtain a description of the backing and how it is secured. A photograph against a bright wall may look quite different when the same object is placed against a dark surface, so compare it with the intended setting.
Define the recipient and the work separately
For an intended Syrian destination, identify the exact recipient, place and physical artwork before considering payment or transport.
