UNESCO’s account of the Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe identifies the royal city, Naqa and Musawwarat es Sufra within the former Kushite heartland. It describes pyramids, temples and other structures alongside evidence of exchanges between regions. The reference supports historical study; it is not an invitation to acquire archaeological material or evidence that a contemporary painting has an ancient provenance.
Choose between a view and an interpretation
A painting can describe the outline of a structure, investigate its mass or use it as a starting point for abstraction. Tell the artist which relationship matters to you. For an existing landscape, compare the height of the horizon and the amount of empty space around the architecture. Ask whether the image depicts a named location, combines several references or is imaginary, and retain that distinction in your collection record.
