The Metropolitan Museum records a 1973 ceiling painting by Yindaka and the Mariwai village workshop on sago palm spathe. Its attribution names a Kwoma clan and the Upper Sepik River region. That precise record is more informative than a broad label such as Pacific art. The museum example introduces painting as part of architecture, with a shaped support rather than a standard rectangular canvas.
Read the outline as well as the image
For your own collection, compare the painted composition with its outer silhouette. A narrow vertical panel can create a different rhythm from a wide canvas even when their areas are similar. Ask for a straight-on photograph and an edge view. If a contemporary work uses bark or other plant material, obtain the artist’s support description and mounting instructions; do not assume ordinary canvas stretching is appropriate.
