The British Museum’s African Rock Art resource discusses Dabous and the project to make a mould of its engravings in 1999. A photograph, a cast and the original rock surface offer different kinds of evidence. For a collector, this is a useful distinction when an online listing shows a reproduction, a study image or an original painting without making the category clear.
Ask which physical object the price refers to
Before comparing appearance, establish whether the sale concerns an original canvas, a print, a cast or a commissioned interpretation. Request the actual dimensions and a photograph of the object’s reverse or edge. If the subject is large in its original setting, a small reproduction can change the visual experience substantially.
