The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County’s Fabric of Community collection describes a Nauruan mat made in two sections joined at the middle. Its collection approach also asks how objects were made, collected and transferred to the museum. That makes the reference useful for both close looking and record keeping. A visible seam is information about construction, not automatically a flaw.
Compare intentional divisions in a painting
Look for places where the canvas changes direction, texture or colour. Does the division create balance or deliberately interrupt it? Ask the artist whether the visible boundary is part of the intended composition. For a multi-panel work, request an arrangement diagram and the total width including gaps. A painting can respond to the rhythm of a woven object without being described as Nauruan textile art or implying that fibre is physically present.
