UNESCO describes Twyfelfontein’s engravings and paintings in relation to hunter-gatherer practices and the surrounding landscape. An engraved line removes material, whereas a painted line adds a visible medium. This distinction is useful when viewing a textured original online, where a dark groove and a painted stroke can look alike in a small image.
Ask how the line meets the ground
Inspect a close view that shows the line’s edge and the surface immediately beside it. Is there a physical indentation, a ridge or only a colour boundary? Then look at the whole canvas to judge how those marks organise the space. If the room has strong directional light, ask whether the surface’s shadows will change significantly. Choose the work for the actual effect you want, rather than assuming rough texture automatically conveys a landscape connection.
