UNESCO’s joint Romania and Moldova inscription identifies the art of the traditional blouse with embroidery on the shoulder, known as altiţă. The named placement matters alongside colour and technique. A design is not just a collection of motifs: it has a relationship to the support and to the way the object is used. A contemporary canvas can be examined with the same attention to where visual activity is concentrated.
Compare borders, corners and the centre
On a painting, ask whether the strongest marks sit near an edge or in the middle. A frame can reinforce that structure or hide it. Request a photograph that includes the entire perimeter before choosing a frame profile. If embroidered textiles are part of the room, compare their concentrated decorative areas with the painting’s focal point. You may prefer an echo of the arrangement or a deliberately different distribution of detail.
