UNESCO’s Urban Heritage Atlas describes Djenné’s earthen bricks, mud plaster and decorative façade elements, including entrance motifs. The architecture depends on material knowledge and maintenance as well as appearance. A contemporary painting can be studied with similar attention to layers, while recognising that a paint film and an earthen building are different material systems.
Look at where texture becomes structure
On a shortlisted original, identify whether relief is concentrated around a central form, repeated evenly or interrupted by smooth passages. Ask the artist how those areas were built. A room with textured walls may need a painting whose broader composition remains clear against that background. Compare an even-light image and an angled view, then return to the whole wall. Dramatic shadows alone are not enough to establish how the work will read in ordinary light.
Prepare a delivery and display brief for the actual property
For Mali, name the final address and recipient and request current route review before agreeing a payment step. Include wall condition and exposure in the room description; a desert-associated palette says nothing about resistance to heat, dust or moisture. Ask for the container size and a protected receiving arrangement. Keep the contemporary artist’s material statement separate from the architectural reference and approve the actual packing method for the raised surface.
