UNESCO’s 2023 inscription explains that Naga motifs in Lao textiles are woven into the cloth rather than printed or embroidered onto it. The record connects the serpent-like figure with beliefs and uses across different stages of life. This is a concrete material and cultural distinction. A painted pattern that resembles the textile should retain its own description instead of inheriting the textile’s process or meaning.
Ask what is built into the surface
For a textured original, establish whether the visible pattern is painted, incised or formed from additional material. Look at a transition where the mark meets the ground. Does it sit on top, reveal an underlayer or follow the weave of the canvas? That close observation can help explain why one surface appeals more than another. If a Lao textile is already in the room, compare the size of its repeat with the painting’s broadest forms.
