The tradition is not adequately represented by a pattern detached from its material. A painting that resembles felt remains a painting unless the artist documents incorporated fibre and the particular process used.
Compare the wall and floor as one arrangement
If a felt carpet will share the room with the new painting, photograph enough of the floor to reveal the scale of its motifs. Decide whether the wall should echo the pattern or provide a calmer area. Compare the canvas’s largest forms with the carpet’s repeats rather than trying to match every edge. A restrained colour field can work well beside complex ornament, while a gestural painting may offer a deliberate change in rhythm.
Ask about the actual texture before choosing a frame
A soft-looking passage in a catalogue image may be painted, woven or physically raised. Request a detail and a clear medium statement.
