UNESCO’s Creative Cities profile connects Jacmel’s carnival with painting, sculpture and large papier-mâché masks, and names painter Préfètte Duffaut among its artistic figures. The practices are related through a place but remain distinct. A collector should identify the particular artist and medium rather than use “Haitian art” as a substitute for the details of the object being offered.
Look at how a busy composition holds together
A vivid work can contain many shapes and still have a clear structure. Identify the largest colour area, the strongest directional line and the place where the eye rests. Ask whether those relationships remain readable from the room’s entrance. For a textured painting, inspect how raised material supports the composition. If your interest is specifically in a Haitian artist or workshop, seek documented work from that source rather than relabeling an unrelated original.
Give fragile construction its own packing discussion
Papier-mâché, a rigid painted panel and a stretched canvas respond differently to pressure and handling. The invoice and packing plan should name the actual support. For a Haitian destination, obtain current review of the recipient and complete carrier route before any payment commitment. Identify a protected receiving area and who will inspect the package.
