Can text-like marks be purely abstract?
Yes. Ask the artist whether they function as language, invented signs or visual gestures. Record the answer rather than assigning a translation from appearance.

UNESCO describes Quiriguá’s sandstone stelae, altars and animal-shaped sculptures, including inscriptions that record dates and historical events. The figures and text form a connected visual system. A viewer who treats the inscriptions as pattern alone misses information. In a contemporary painting, writing or symbols may also have a specific role that deserves an explanation from the artist.
Ask whether marks are language, texture or both
If a shortlisted work includes lettering, numbers or repeated signs, ask what they mean and whether they are legible text. Compare how those marks organise the composition at close range and across the room. A dense surface may offer repeated discoveries, while a simpler work may be easier to read at a distance. Request a high-detail image of the relevant area without allowing the detail to replace the full painting in your decision.
Keep the object’s age separate from its subject
A new painting depicting a Maya monument remains a contemporary object. The artist, production date and medium should be stated accurately on its invoice. For a Guatemalan destination, provide the final town, address and receiving contact, then clarify the complete transport handoff. If your collection also includes historical pieces, maintain separate provenance files. A modern-art quote cannot establish the status or permitted movement of an archaeological object.
