UNESCO’s Gelati Monastery record identifies mural paintings from several centuries and a twelfth-century mosaic in the main church. Seen in a small image, both can appear as flat fields of colour. At closer range, their construction and interaction with light differ. A collector can use this distinction to ask whether a contemporary painting’s visual detail comes from pigment, physical texture or an incorporated material.
Evaluate the surface at the normal viewing position
