UNESCO’s Konso documentation describes a terraced cultural landscape and wooden waka figures associated with commemoration of the deceased. The material, setting and purpose belong together. Looking only at the figure’s outline would omit a substantial part of its meaning. A new painting with elongated forms or earth colours does not inherit that memorial role merely through resemblance.
Decide whether meaning or formal structure leads the purchase
If the cultural function is central to your interest, seek knowledgeable, documented sources for the particular object. If you are comparing contemporary originals for an Ethiopian interior, describe your response to proportion, repetition or texture without assigning an unverified tradition to the artist. Examine whether the composition is built around one dominant form or a group. Compare it at the distance from which it will usually be seen, not only as an enlarged detail.
Keep different kinds of objects in separate records
A modern canvas, a newly carved sculpture and an older cultural object require different evidence and handling. Record the actual artist, date, material and ownership history that the seller can support.
