Does a school affiliation authenticate a signature?
No. It is background information that should be checked alongside the maker’s record and the actual painting. A signature photograph alone cannot establish a complete history.

UNESCO Brazzaville reported a March 2023 exhibition of paintings by different generations of artists trained at the Poto-Poto School of Painting. The named school and city matter. They should not be confused with Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the exhibition does not imply that every Congolese painter shares that training. Look for the individual artist within the broader history.
Compare works by decisions, not labels alone
When a listing names an artistic school, ask how the specific artist relates to it and what evidence supports the statement. Then examine the painting itself: the arrangement of figures, the spacing of marks, the use of background and the handling of colour. An individual work can depart from expectations associated with a school. For an unrelated abstract original, describe the qualities you enjoy without asking the seller to attach a more marketable training history.
Write the country name unambiguously
An international inquiry should say Republic of the Congo and provide the full city and address. Do not rely on “Congo” alone in the shipping paperwork. Retain the artist’s exact name, work title and dimensions across the invoice and certificate. If a frame or crate changes the outer size, add those measurements separately. Before payment, ask for the final receiving point and the party responsible for the import and onward delivery.

Can I use the Poto-Poto reference to choose an abstract canvas?
Yes, to sharpen observations about rhythm and colour. Keep the contemporary canvas’s real authorship separate from the historical reference and do not imply the artist studied there.
