The techniques and motifs belong to a particular built and social environment. A photograph of a patterned wall is therefore more than a catalogue of shapes. It does not establish that a new canvas using black, white or earth colours belongs to the same tradition.
Study how a repeated mark changes near an opening, corner or boundary in an architectural reference. In a contemporary painting, look for similar decisions at the canvas edge: does the pattern stop, overlap or continue around the side? Ask the artist to explain the actual construction of the work. For a room with patterned textiles or existing decoration, compare the spacing of those elements with the painting’s rhythm. A simpler field may be more useful than adding another equally dense pattern.
