A picture of a medieval subject is not necessarily a medieval object, and a modern artist’s expressive figure should not be assigned a historical school merely because it resembles a museum image.
Compare expression at the intended distance
For a figurative painting, examine the face and hands at close range, then return to the full composition. Ask what remains visible from the actual seating position. For an abstract original, a similar exercise concerns gesture: a small movement of the brush may carry the expression, or it may be the whole arrangement of forms. Decide which experience matters to you before increasing the size. A larger version of a thumbnail is not a substitute for seeing the actual work’s resolved details.
Choose a location that supports careful viewing
