UNESCO places the Tsodilo Hills in northwestern Botswana and describes their concentration of rock paintings within a distinctive quartzite landscape. A panel’s position and rock surface matter alongside the marks themselves. A cropped photograph can lose that relationship. Use the reference as an exercise in careful looking, not as permission to detach images from their cultural setting or to assign ancient origins to a modern work.
Compare ground, edge and mark
For a contemporary original, ask how much of the ground remains visible between painted passages. Look at whether the composition reaches the edges or seems to float within the support. A surface with strong texture may require a larger viewing distance to read coherently; a small detail can make relief appear more dominant than it is in the whole painting. Request both views before deciding. Explain which relationship interests you—isolated marks, repeated figures or an expansive field—without asking for an undocumented cultural imitation.
A landscape reference does not prescribe outdoor display
A painting inspired by open terrain may still be intended solely for a controlled indoor space. For the Botswana room, describe direct sun and any open-air exposure instead of assuming that an earth-toned palette makes a work resilient. Include the final receiving town, the access route inside the property and a named recipient. Ask the carrier to confirm the complete service and request packaging that protects the particular paint surface. The invoice should identify a contemporary original accurately.
