UNESCO inscribed Konjic woodcarving in 2017. Its account includes hand-carved furniture, interiors and smaller objects, with skills transmitted through workshops and families. The tradition has a recognisable visual identity but is also a process of learning and making. A painting placed beside such furniture can complement it without being described as part of that tradition.
Give carved furniture enough visual space
Start a room comparison with a photograph that includes the entire cabinet, table or chair beneath the proposed painting. Note where carving is densest and where the furniture presents a quieter plane. A heavily textured canvas may echo the depth, while a smoother painting may create useful separation. Compare both possibilities at the same size. Repeating every carved motif in the picture is not necessary; the relationship between active and calm areas often matters more than matching details.
Make frame depth and access part of the brief
If a frame will sit above projecting furniture, measure the available wall and the distance from the furniture’s top. Ask for the outer frame size and the painting’s depth rather than relying on canvas dimensions alone.
