Can I infer texture from a photograph alone?
Only partially. Ask for an oblique photograph and, where available, a short moving view. A frontal image records composition well but can conceal relief or exaggerate it under directional lighting.

UNESCO’s Geghard record describes rock-cut churches and tombs, cross-stones and a monastic centre that included a scriptorium and library. These are connected forms of cultural production, but they use different supports and scales. A carved inscription, an illuminated page and a painted canvas should not be compared only by colour. Their making, purpose and relationship to light deserve separate attention.
Use side lighting to understand relief
If the depth of carved stone is what attracts you, ask to see a textured painting from a shallow angle as well as straight on. Surface ridges can create shadows that change through the day; those shadows are not necessarily dark pigment. Mark the likely direction of daylight on a room photograph and indicate whether artificial lighting can be adjusted. Compare the work at close range and from the entrance to the room. Texture that is compelling in a detail may read as a quieter field at the intended distance.
Keep a contemporary canvas’s documentation specific
The invoice should describe the actual material rather than a broad phrase such as “Armenian-inspired art.” Record the artist, support, dimensions, date and any framing supplied. If a frame adds substantial weight or depth, request separate outer measurements for access planning. For the Armenian destination, give the final address and receiving contact and ask the carrier to confirm the route. Historical or sacred objects already in a collection require their own provenance record; they should not be folded into a contemporary painting’s paperwork.
